Educational information only

All content on BikeGear — calculators, articles, tables, and examples — is published for general educational purposes. It is not gearing advice and is not a substitute for a qualified professional. We are not a bike fitter for position and knee issuess, and no client or advisory relationship is created by your use of this Site.

Gearing math assumes accurate wheel and tire diameters — tire models shift real rollout by a few percent. Knee pain is a fit and cadence problem before a gearing problem; spinning easier gears at higher cadence is the standard advice.

Gear comparisons across bikes assume similar crank lengths and rider power. Fixed-gear riders: brakeless riding is a skill and legal question of its own.

Accuracy of calculations

We implement well-known, publicly documented formulas (see the methodology section on each calculator page and standard cycling-geometry conventions (gear inches, development) as applicable). Even correctly implemented formulas produce estimates that depend on your inputs and assumptions. Real-world outcomes vary. Do not rely on a single web tool for a consequential decision.
